On February 12th, Holtz & Reed and the Boston Bar Association co-hosted a panel discussion on appellate advocacy, providing practitioners a wealth of practical advice from Hon. David A. Lowy of the Supreme Judicial Court, Tom Reed of Holtz & Reed, and former Superior Court Judge, Nancy S. Holtz, now an arbitrator and mediator with JAMS.  In this town-hall style presentation moderated by Judge Holtz, Justice Lowy and Mr. Reed shared their collective experience, recounted old “war stories,” and engaged with the audience in a rich Q&A session.  The panel covered a wide range of issues, including how to maximize the limited time allotted for oral argument, how to prepare for the unexpected, and how to manage a “hot bench.”

As an appellate advocate, Mr. Reed appears before the Massachusetts Appeals Court and Supreme Judicial Court and before the United States Court of Appeals for the First, Second, and Federal Circuits.  Among others, his notable appellate cases include Shervin v. Partners HealthCare System, Inc., 804 F.3d 23 (1st Cir.); Boyce v. Soundview Technology Group, Inc., 464 F.3d 376 (2nd Cir.); Giuliano v. Fulton, 399 F.3d 381 (1st Cir.); Joule, Inc. v. Simmons, 495 Mass. 81; and Cohan v. Feuer, 422 Mass. 151.
