Massachusetts Adds “Veteran Status” As A Protected Class

Posted on: Monday, July 18th, 2016

On July 14, 2016, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed into law An Act Relative to Housing, Operations, Military Service, and Enrichment.  Referred to more commonly as “The HOME Act,” the new law adds “veteran status” as a protected class under the Massachusetts employment discrimination statute, M.G.L. c. 151B.

The HOME Act amends the current law by adding “veteran status” as a protected category.  Prior to this change, only active military personnel were protected by Chapter 151B, however, Massachusetts employers must now treat “veteran status” as a protected class as well, along with race, ancestry, color, religion, and others.
